TRAINING

Katrina Penman is a flutist and composer. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Music in London where she studied flute with Jaime Martin.  She later carried out postgraduate studies at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Davide Formisano. Katrina plays a 9K Aurumite Powell flute.

AWARDS

Her recordings of her own compositions have won prizes at the Global Music Awards, Akademia Awards (Los Angeles), Vienna Classical Music Academy Awards, European Classical Music Awards and the World Music Gran Prix.
Her prize-winning works for flute ensemble have been premiered by world-class flutists at Sir James Galway’s International Flute Festival in Switzerland and by the flute orchestra of Portuguese Flute Association.  These works have been performed in many different theatres and conservatories around Europe, among them, the Auditori in Barcelona, in collaboration with the ESMUC (Catalunya’s Superior Music Conservatory).  Katrina has also written works for multidisciplinary projects involving dancers and visual artists.

SOLO & CHAMBER MUSICIAN

As a solo & chamber musician, Katrina has performed her own works at the NFA Convention in Chicago (2022) together with guitarist María Elena de Prada, at the Flute Center of New York, in a variety of halls in Miami and at a large number of concert halls and conservatories in Spain.  She has given chamber recitals at venues including St Martin in the Fields and the National Gallery (London), Teatro Filodrammatici (Milan), Museum of Modern Art (Nice), Universitat Der Kunste (Berlin) and at numerous venues throughout Spain, where she has been based since 2009.
In 2023 she performed as a soloist as the Brazilian Flute Festival with the support of Powell Flutes, and at the Spanish Flute Convention in Malaga.  In 2024 she performed two recitals at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention in Washington D.C. and will return in August to the NFA Convention, held in San Antonio, to present her recent works for solo flute and to participate in the Showcase held by her editors, Brotons & Mercadal.

ORCHESTRAL FLUTE PLAYER

As an orchestral flute player, Katrina had performed with orchestras such as La Scala in Milan, where she collaborated in seven productions in the 2006/7 and 2007/8 seasons under conductors such as Dudamel and Chailly, and the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Antonio Pappano, as well as with numerous Spanish orchestras.  She has performed in festivals including the Proms in London and has toured in Japan, Russia and throughout Europe with the Symphonica d’Italia conducted by Lorin Maazel.

DIRECTOR

Katrina has musically directed three theatrical productions by Teloncillo Teatro (winners of the Spanish National prize for theatre for children and young people).  For two of these shows, she also provided the musical arrangements.

TEACHER

As a teacher, Katrina has held masterclasses and courses at many different conservatories in Spain, including the Royal Conservatory in Madrid.  In 2023 she was a member of the jury at the Spanish Flute Association’s young performers’ competition, for which she had been commissioned to write the compulsory test piece.  She has contributed to music collections such as the “Young Flute Player” series and has made many arrangements for youth orchestras and bands.

PUBLICATIONS

Katrina has published a large selection of works for flute with the Brotons & Mercadal editorial.

She has written educational pieces for the “Lyrical flute miniatures” collection published by Allegro Music Publishing.

Her award-winning work “Portuguese Variations”, for flute orchestra, is published by Sonata Ediciones.
